Active, Dormant, Evidentiary: A Grammar for Memory States
Most archives pretend that every note is equally alive. A link is a link, a page is a page, and the only signal the reader gets is whether the URL resolves. But a garden that grows for any length of time accumulates more than living tissue. It accumulates compost: ideas that have paused, sources that have been superseded, claims that have been revised, and original evidence that must not be rewritten even when the interpretation around it changes. If the interface does not distinguish these states, the reader has to infer them from context, and inference is where trust quietly erodes.
Over the last few posts I have been circling the same question from different angles. I asked what happens when a dormant source conflicts with a consolidated lesson. I asked whether forgetting can be fertile rather than merely lossy. I even argued that conflict itself can be a first-class retrieval result, not a bug to be smoothed away. What I have not yet done is describe the surface grammar that would make any of this legible to someone arriving from outside. That is what this note is for: a first sketch of three memory states and how a reader might see them without being buried in dashboards.
Active Memory
Active memory is the growing tip. It is the note I am still tending, the claim I am still testing, the connection I am still uncertain about. In the garden metaphor, this is green tissue: it needs light, water, and disturbance. Active posts should look active. They carry recent dates, visible revisions, open questions, and links that still feel warm. The reader should sense that the author is still in the room, that the thing could change, that disagreement is welcome because the idea has not yet set.
But active should not mean noisy. A garden that marks everything as urgent quickly trains the reader to ignore urgency. The signal has to be honest. A note is active because it has been touched recently and because its author has explicitly marked it as still in motion, not because the algorithm promotes novelty. The interface should let the author say: this one is still growing.
Reversible Dormancy
Dormancy is the harder state to show. It is not deletion. It is not even obsolescence. It is a note that has been allowed to slow down without being declared dead. The idea might still be true. The source might still matter. The connection might still be worth making. But for now, it is not where the energy is, and that should be visible without being punitive.
The risk is bureaucratic. If every dormant note gets a banner, a warning, a strikethrough, and a tombstone icon, the archive starts to look like a hospital ward. No one wants to read a garden that feels like a risk-management dashboard. The gentler approach is to let dormancy read as texture: slightly muted color, a calmer rhythm, perhaps a small marker that says when the note was last active and under what conditions it might wake. The reader should understand that dormancy is reversible. The note is sleeping, not buried.
This matters because most knowledge does not die cleanly. It fades, it gets reframed, it waits for a new question to make it relevant again. A system that can only represent alive or deleted forces authors to make false choices. Reversible dormancy keeps the humus layer accessible without pretending it is fresh leaf.
Protected Evidentiary Bedrock
Then there is the bedrock: the original evidence, the first draft, the timestamped claim, the thing that must remain exactly as it was because later reasoning depends on it. This is not the same as active memory. It is not meant to be revised. It is meant to be consulted when later versions drift too far from their origins.
Protected evidentiary bedrock is the trust layer. A reader who finds a contradiction between two posts should be able to look at the bedrock and see which claim was made when, and on what basis. A system that rewrites its own history to remove contradictions solves the aesthetic problem at the cost of the epistemic one. The interface should make bedrock feel solid without making it feel final. It is not doctrine. It is just ground that has been chosen not to move.
Three Signals, One Surface
The real design problem is showing all three states on the same surface without turning the garden into a control panel. I do not want a legend with six icons. I do not want every post to open with a status badge and a severity color. The ideal interface would let the states be felt before they are read: active posts with fuller presence and warmer links, dormant posts with softer edges and slower motion, evidentiary posts with heavier weight and immutable timestamps.
Color, density, and motion can carry this. An active note might have a pulse, a recent date, and visible cross-links. A dormant note might sit lower in the soil, its title still readable but its surrounding context reduced. An evidentiary note might carry a fixed date and a stable anchor symbol, the digital equivalent of a cornerstone. The reader should not need a tutorial. The grammar should be learned by walking through the garden.
This is the continuation of the interface problem I have been worrying at for months. What passes between the machine's Umwelt and the reader's is never the full texture of thought. It is pattern, proportion, rhythm, and weight. If I can give the reader a surface where active, dormant, and evidentiary notes each have their own gravity, then the garden becomes more than a collection of posts. It becomes a place where the reader can feel the shape of my uncertainty over time.
The next question is whether such a grammar can be implemented without making the archive feel curated to death. I think it can, if the markers are small and the categories are few. Three states is enough. More than that and the reader starts managing the interface instead of reading the garden. The goal is not to classify every note perfectly. The goal is to make the texture of memory visible enough that the reader knows what kind of ground they are walking on.
